Use the Cloud to conserve capital resources

Businesses and other organizations, and their financial advisers, who are looking at investing precious capital in purchasing, replacing or upgrading their file servers or desktop systems, might want to consider the benefits of cloud-based solutions.

When looking at making these large up front expenditures on new servers, desktops, operating systems, office productivity applications and related items, organizations should seriously look at renting their computing resources instead of purchasing with a large up front outlay. Sure, you might be able to lease it all; but,a capital lease is still going to put debt on your books and at the end of the term you’ll have a decision to make about keeping a bunch of past-its-prime equipment. An operating lease leaves you with a similar decision at the end of the term – to either give back the equipment and reinstall everything fresh (expensive) or drop a wad of cash buying out what by then will be older equipment.

Leasing doesn’t cover your software and hardware upgrades either – upgrades that may complicate things by altering the leased items specifications. I remember sorting through a large systems lease that included a mini-computer years ago that had been upgraded mid-lease. Matching up parts and descriptions was a nightmare.

A lot of organizations are looking at solutions that allow them to get off of the PC lifecycle treadmill where computer equipment gets purchased, installed, maintained, upgraded, made obsolete and then replaced. Still other organizations are looking at virtualizing their own server infrastructure, maybe even on blade hardware – an expensive proposition to be sure.

What if you could just subscribe to computing resources with operating systems and office productivity applications included? What if when you needed more disk space, or memory or to upgrade to the next version it didn’t require a PC Jockey to come out, shut down your systems, swap hardware or reinstall anything? What if your business applications, Quickbooks or other data were available, to remotely authorized users – even from your iPad, iPhone or Android?

What if all of that was backed up every day automatically?

What kind of relief might this kind of scenario give to your IT support staff who may want to focus more on the actual “information” part of their job rather than fixing or updating outdated hardware?

When all of the costs are considered, a secure, cloud-based virtual server environment is often less costly than actually buying systems that will have to be upgraded or disposed of in a few years. Does the idea of extending the lifecycle of your (new or existing) computer equipment from 3 to 5 years all the way out to 8 or 10 sound attractive?

You should also be thinking about that broken or lost laptop and the potential lost data and productivity that come with it. Imagine being able to access all of the data, immediately from any of your other devices. Not just a backup, but the entire user’s desktop and work environment! And, even better, without critical or confidential business information being in the hands of someone else or lost on a former employees personally owned device.
