Top Challenges Faced by School Technology Coordinators

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Hoosier Educational Computer Coordinators (HECC) Conference representing Polleo Systems. It was a great opportunity to meet hundreds of IT professionals serving Indiana schools.

Having three days to discuss the challenges faced by school technology coordinators was an opportune time to offer information on the ways Polleo Systems supports its clients in planning, budgeting and managing technology as efficiently as possible through cloud-based computing solutions.

Here are two of the common conversations I had with the education IT pros at HECC:

1. There is an increasing urgency for schools to implement fail-safe disaster recovery plans.

The growing trend toward and demand for technology-based learning increasingly challenges IT coordinators to implement the most reliable DR solutions. Disaster recovery is not just about how a school system backs up their data, but also how quickly it can return students and educators to normal functioning in the event of downtime—and do so without taxing limited resources or losing valuable information.

At Polleo Systems we provide clients with a cloud DR solution that automatically and reliably pushes their valuable data to off-site, secure and geographically-redundant data centers. This means we have a protected cache of data available at all times and quickly can replicate an operating environment in the cloud if the physical environment is unavailable.

2. Schools need to find ways and means to better facilitate the growing demands of 1:1 learning.

School IT coordinators are challenged with facilitating the growing demands of technology-based learning while aligning IT infrastructure with operational objectives and budgets. They’re being challenged to adopt and manage technology more efficiently – whether to improve educational outcomes, meet budgetary goals or ensure state requirements are met.

In reality, many technology coordinators spend a lot of their time (as well as their school districts’ capital funds) maintaining infrastructure. This leads to little time to focus on growth and providing educators and administrators with innovative solutions to the increasing demand for technology and data availability.

Polleo Systems can support this challenge by providing virtualization solutions. Server or desktop virtualization is a proactive approach to meeting demand for access to data in and out of the classroom, minimizing additional burden on IT staff and resources, and avoiding unbudgeted requests to the Board for additional funding when infrastructure “surprises” occur.
